By now, nearly everyone paying attention knows that Barack Obama has lied countless times over the years in order to further his academic and political career. He is, in fact, a “composite.” And what we do know is just a hint of what there is yet to know, given that all his academic records are sealed.
Our president lied about his mother’s lack of health insurance. He lied about his father’s early life. His publisher’s brochure described him as “born in Kenya” for years, until he began running for president. There are countless other examples of his prevarications that fluff out his phony résumé. It is almost certain that he did not write Dreams from My Father by himself and that his relationship with Jeremiah Wright was cultivated to serve his political future…until it didn’t. And now, even Michelle is unable to keep the fabricated facts of her husband’s life straight.
And then there is Elizabeth Warren, the darling of the Boston/Harvard left, the self-described Cherokee without a shred of evidence to prove her claims of Native American heritage. Her claim made her a diversity hire at two prestigious schools. She even submitted a couple of recipes to a Native American cookbook, Pow Wow Chow, that she borrowed from Pierre Frainey. She chose those recipes poorly; Oklahoma Cherokees probably did not dine on cold omelets with crabmeat!
Bill Clinton‘s moral lapses and crimes against women are legendary and too numerous to list, yet he still has adoring fans who would vote for him in a minute if he was on a ballot — any ballot. Hillary does not score much better on the truth and morality scale: Whitewater, managing her husband’s “bimbo eruptions,” her fabricated helicopter landing in Bosnia amid sniper fire, etc. Only a few months ago, she called Syria’s Bashir Assad a “reformer.” She is at the very least a poor judge of character.
And the Kennedy men…they have always been, and remain, despicable cads who have used and abused women habitually. Still, people support them for public office. Jack was a hound. Ted was expelled from Harvard for cheating. The list goes on and on.
Then there is the odious John Edwards, who got too close to the White House for comfort.
John Kerry grossly exaggerated his four months of service in Vietnam. When he returned to the U.S., he did everything he could to malign and discredit American servicemen in the ’60s. Today he revels in wealth he did not earn, but rather married. Still, people vote for him! Richard Blumenthal was elected despite having lied about his (non-)service in Vietnam.
Eliot Spitzer got his own television show after being outed as a regular patron of prostitutes. As district attorney of NY, Spitzer viciously persecuted and prosecuted New York businessmen for ethics violations. And then there is the noted exhibitionist Anthony Weiner, who still has a dedicated fan club. Its members are convinced that he was framed! How is that for critical thinking?
Now our nation’s attorney general, Eric Holder, though not an elected official, is traveling around the country doing the president’s bidding by lying to African-American audiences. He is telling them that the drive to require a photo ID to vote is a Republican conspiracy to deprive them of their voting rights. Quite the reverse is true. He has ordered Florida to stop purging their voter rolls of ineligible voters, illegal immigrants, and dead people. Why? The only answer is to perpetrate vote fraud. As with his lawsuits against Arizona and Texas, he is attempting to force a state to stop enforcing federal laws! How does the chief law enforcement officer of the country do that and keep his job?
It would seem from just these few examples that our political class does indeed live by different rules, or by no rules. There are countless other tales of the wicked abuses of power by our elected and appointed officials, who have so much control over our lives and want more. Men and women who have committed grave ethical and/or moral failures run for office and are elected regularly.
So how and why has our culture failed to inculcate in our citizenry the critical thinking skills necessary to assess character? To recognize right from wrong? To judge?
Could it be that the moral relativism engendered by the doctrine of multiculturalism so beloved by our media and academic class has robbed us of the ability to recognize right from wrong? Multiculturalism teaches that no culture is better than another and that each one, no matter how antithetical to our own, is discrete and must be respected as equal. No more “Out of Many One” for our institutions of higher education. Our universities have been thoroughly taken over by these cultural affectations over the past forty years. It’s what they drill into their students, over and over again. It is the mantra from which our media never deviate.
In the pursuit of postmodernist utopia, students are indoctrinated with the silly meme that humankind is destroying the planet, but they are not allowed to judge character. They learn that they must never judge, must never be judgmental. Too many parents have given their children over to this nonsense for too long. And so we elect people like the Kennedys, the Clintons, and Obama.
